IN MEMORY OF DR. DAVID V. J. BELL
Learning for a Sustainable Future
2006 – 2017
Dr. David V.J. Bell has been a member of LSF since 1995 and became Chair of the Board of Directors in 2006. He has been an integral part of our organization for over 22 years. His passion, commitment and dedication to sustainability and education have left a permanent imprint on policy makers, educators and youth across Canada and internationally. LSF would not be where we are today if not for his leadership and countless contributions which have been recognized through awards including: the Green Toronto Award for Leadership in Sustainability, the EECOM Award, the Harry Jerome Award, 2017 Clean50 Award, and the Jackie Robinson Fortitude Award.
To honour David’s optimism, work, and passion for Education for Sustainable Development, The Dr. David V.J. Bell Memorial Fund has been established at Learning for a Sustainable Future (LSF). The fund will continue David’s important legacy in “empowering our children to change the world”. To donate to the Dr. David V.J. Bell Memorial Fund please visit: https://www.canadahelps.org/dn/9340
A political scientist by training, David was an undergraduate at York University in its earliest years, graduating with his B. A. in 1965. He received his PhD from Harvard University in 1969, and taught at Michigan State University for 2 years before returning to York in 1971 where he served as Dean of the Faculty of Graduate Studies (1981‑87) and Dean of the Faculty of Environmental Studies (1992‑1996). David served as a member of the National Round Table on Environment and Economy (2003 – 2007), Chair of the Board of Directors of Parc-Downsview-Park (2002 – 2006), and as consultant and advisor to universities, private sector companies, to governments at all 3 levels in Canada, internationally to the G8, and to the Governments of China and Jamaica. David was also an accomplished jazz bassist who years ago studied with Ray Brown at Oscar Peterson’s Advanced School of Contemporary Music.
David was an advocate for youth and a champion for the environment. He was a friend, mentor, and inspiration for all. He will be sorely missed by his family, friends and colleagues. The LSF Board and staff extend our condolences, sympathies and support to David’s wife, Kaaren Bell, and their family at this difficult time.
