About the Mining the Carbon Program
Welcome to “EcoLeague: Mining the Carbon out of People’s Lifestyles”, a program of Learning for a Sustainable Future. The goal of the program is to allow you to measure and reduce your electricity use and your carbon footprint at home and at school. Over the next few months, you can:
- learn about and decide whether you care about the impacts of using too much electricity
- conduct a home and a school audit (please click here for the Home Audit - Hard Copy, and click here for the School Audit - Hard Copy)
- enter your data on this site to receive free electricity-saving tools
- use Kill-a-Watt meters to measure how much electricity your devices use
- take actions to reduce your electricity waste at school and home
- conduct a follow-up audit and enter your data online
- share your home actions to be eligible for prizes (see the "Prizes" tab for details)

- Do some of the “why care activities” from the “Mining the Carbon” kit. - Conduct baseline audits of electricity use at school and home using this Electricity Audit Tool by October 29th - Once the school and home baseline audits data is entered online, each student will receive 3 compact fluorescent light bulbs to take home! The class will also receive 5 power bars to use at school. These will help you with saving electricity at both school and home. |
- You will use the Kill-a-Watt meters to test the electricity use of different devices. This information will help you to determine where electricity is being wasted/saved, and allow you to brainstorm innovative and effective ways of reducing electricity use. - Take actions at home and school to reduce your electricity use. - You may conduct follow-up audits periodically to determine the effectiveness of your interventions. |
- Take more actions to further reduce your electricity use at school and home. - Continue to conduct follow-up audits periodically to determine the effectiveness of your interventions.
|
- Take more actions to further reduce your electricity use at school and home. - Conduct your final home and school electricity audits by January 28th, 2011
|
- By February 1st, 2011 enter the data online. - Each teacher who has their class input the school and home follow up data is eligible to receive a free issue of Green Teacher Magazine. - Students who have entered their follow-up data online become eligible for prizes. Please see the “Prizes” tab for all of the details |
Winners will be announced March 1st, 2011 - Please see the “Prizes” tab for full details. |
Using the Online Tool!
- Conduct your home and/or school audit using the data collection sheets.Click here for a printer friendly version of the data collection sheets.
- Visit the Login/Register tab. Please note that you must create two separate login names with two separate passwords, one for home and one for school. In order to access the home audit tool, you will need to log out of your school account, and log back in using your home account.
- Once you have registered and logged in, you will find yourself back on the "About the audit" homepage. However, you will now see some new tabs at the top, including, "Enter data." Go directly to Enter data.
- Once on the Enter data page, click on the "Add a room" link. This will allow you to "Select a type of room," and then you must name the room. Click "Add."
- Once you have clicked "Add," you will see a link to the room you have just created. Clicking on this link will open up the audit questions for that room.
- As you answer the audit questions, you will notice that each action calculates your watt usage, and earns you an electricity "savers” point (for an electricity behaviour that is energy-saving) or assigns you an electricity "hoggers” demerit (for an electricity behaviour that is wastes energy).
- Once you have completed the questions for a room, scroll back up to the top to add another room. Your questions and answers will be saved automatically.
- To view your questions and answers again, please visit the "My progress" tab, and click "View questions."
